Position Overview

This temporary position will assist MPS Culinary & Wellness Services (CWS) with food education program planning and implementation to provide experiential learning opportunities for students. Food education enables young people to connect the food they eat to the way it was grown and how it makes them feel. The position will work with the CWS Wellness team and MPS staff district-wide. This project is grant-funded by the Life Time Foundation, with support from the Engelsma Family Foundation.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Assist CWS staff with the implementation of food education initiatives, including classroom cooking kits and Harvest of the Month activities.
  • Communicate with MPS staff on food education activities. 
  • Contribute to the implementation of other MPS CWS projects as needed.
  • Assist with evaluation and reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or a graduate of a post-secondary certificate or degree program (including community/technical college, undergraduate, and graduate programs) with coursework in public health, nutrition, or another related field.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must provide own transportation (car, public transportation, bike/walk) for visits to school buildings located district-wide. All schools are located within the City of Minneapolis boundaries.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks within set deadlines; excellent time management skills.
  • Content knowledge in school wellness, physical activity, healthy food access, and nutrition.
  • Experience implementing and evaluating community-based public health policies and programs.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative data collection (e.g. assessments, surveys, key informant interviews) and creating summary reports.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications.
  • Experience developing communications materials for use on web and social media platforms.

Duration/Timing

10-15 hours per week from March 2026 to December 2026. Start date, hours, and days of the week are flexible, but office hours are typically Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Special events or meetings may occasionally fall on evenings or weekends to accommodate school staff availability.

 

Compensation

This is a paid internship with funding made possible by the Life Time Foundation with support from the Engelsma Family Foundation. This position is not eligible for benefits.
