This position will be paired with a K-2 Math & Literacy Specialist position to make a 1.0 FTE position.

 

SUMMARY
Coordinate and facilitate services for the MPS Young Scholars Talent Development program at the K-5 school level to increase the number of motivated students with untapped giftedness to allow access to high-level critical and creative thinking activities on a regular basis.


Implement higher-level critical thinking and creative instructional strategies by following the
MPS YS curriculum in order to
● Increase higher-level thinking skills
● Promote creative and critical thinking
● Coach teachers on increasing identify students showing creative and critical thinking abilities


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The MPS Young Scholars TOSA is a part of the Talent Development Advanced Academics (TDAA) Department and collaborates with the classroom teachers in identified sites to identify students with high potential.


MPS Young Scholars TOSA work collaboratively with classroom teachers by:
● Model critical and creative thinking lessons in order to increase teachers ability to identify students showing potential in these areas
● Support classrooms by advising teachers on enrichment and extension activities.
● Prepare and distribute information on the MPS Young Scholars Program to administrators, teachers, and parents of students to be serviced.
● Communicate with administrators, teachers, TDAA, other MPS YS TOSAs, after-school staff, and parents about the progress of students in the MPS Young Scholars Program.
● Develop and implement specialized learning activities for students who have needs in the general classroom and beyond the general classroom. The curriculum is to include independent projects, cross-grade offerings, creative problem solving, research of interest, critical problem solving, service learning, presentation skills, STEM, and leadership skills.
● Collect meaningful data on students’ progress to determine the effectiveness of the program to be shared with TDAA.
● Provide feedback to TDAA on the implementation of the MPS Young Scholars Program.
● Creates lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful, and interesting as well as multicultural/gender/ability fair.
● Selects and adapts materials appropriate for diverse student populations and skills.
● Promotes problem-solving, cooperative skills, and conflict resolution strategies.
● Perform other duties as assigned.
● Attend MPSYS PD bi-monthly


QUALIFICATIONS
● Valid Minnesota Teaching License
● Advanced degree or certificate in Gifted Education or hold an MPS Certificate in Talent
Development and Advanced Learner Education or be willing to complete the certificate by January of 2022.
● A minimum of 5 years of classroom experience


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
● Knowledge of Diverse Advanced/Gifted Learners and the identification process in MPS.
● Knowledge of assessment strategies, resources, and appropriately differentiated materials,
curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on creative and critical thinking skills.
● Experience in and knowledge of equity principles and cultural competencies of academic standards and the district's mission, goals, programs, and curriculum to support teachers and sites.
● Ability to establish and maintain trustful, confidential, and supportive relationships with teachers to help develop them as professionals.
● Ability to encourage multiple perspectives and be willing to have difficult conversations with others.
● Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills


QUALIFICATIONS
● Valid Minnesota Teaching License
