Summary

Provide quality instruction aligned ot the state and national standards.  The candidate must be knowledgeable of district music standards and have the ability to maintain consistent disciplinary skills. Responsive Classroom training desired. 

Essential Functions

  • Have a working knowledge of and implement the Minnesota State Standards and the District Graduation Requirements; knowledge of the subject matter, classroom management techniques, current researched best practices and strategies, as well as students' learning styles and needs, both academic and affective.

  • Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning, and problem solving.

  • Assess students' developmental, cognitive, and social needs and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.

  • Create lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful, and interesting, as well as multicultural/gender and ability fair/developmentally appropriate.

  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational decisions and use family and community resources to support learning.

  • Acquire knowledge of the goals of the Minneapolis Public School District Improvement Agenda and site/school goals. Work to support and achieve those goals.

  • Assess own instructional effectiveness through the Professional Development Process (PDP). Participate in ongoing and regular staff, team, and individual professional development.

  • Instruction & Curriculum: Develop and implement scaffolded lesson plans for Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band (9th grade ensemble), String Orchestra, and Beginning Strings with a focus on EL and culturally relevant pedagogy.

  • Ensemble Directing: Lead daily rehearsals and prepare students for school concerts, outreach concerts, pep band events, annual music tour, and other performances

  • Event Planning- Collaborate with music team to facilitate after-school events, including concerts, fundraisers, recruiting, and community outreach events

    • Creating programs, posters, and graphic designs 

    • As a music team, we support approximately 20 events per year outside of the school day, plus an annual tour. 

  • Asset Management: Oversee the inventory, daily usage, maintenance, and repair of school-owned musical instruments, sheet music, and equipment.

  • Financial Management: 

    • Collaborate with the Boosters Treasurer and the Music Team to keep accurate financial records

    • Manage relationships with vendors to keep accounts and records current

    • Pursue and manage additional funding through grant writing, fundraising, and partnerships

  • Collaboration: Daily teaming with the other music teachers and collaboration with dance and visual art teachers, South Music Boosters parent/guardian group, and parents to plan events and encourage program recruitment.

  • Auditorium: Manage use of auditorium space, calendar, and equipment with other members of the Music Team.

  • Mentorship: Encourage and prepare students for advanced musical opportunities, such as All-State auditions, solos, and college scholarship preparations

  • Advocacy and Recruitment: Provide a vision for the continuous development of the music program, serving as needed to represent South and MPS through active recruitment, additional performances, and collaboration

Education and Experience Guidelines

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education or a related field from an accredited university.

  • Licensure: Valid State Teaching Certification in Instrumental Music (grades K-12 or 7-12).

  • Musicianship: Demonstrated proficiency in playing and teaching woodwind, brass, and string instruments. Must be able to teach beginning and intermediate students while differentiating for more advanced students.

  • Pedagogy: Strong skills in building scaffolded units, lessons, and the use of rubrics for grading. 

  • Community Engagement: Actively engaging both the South Community and the Twin Cities Community at-large through cultivating and sustaining partnerships. Develop relationships with K-8 music teachers in South’s attendance area.

  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, classroom management, organizational, and collaborative skills

  • Preferred Skills: Grant Writing, Budget Management, Community Outreach, knowledge of Google Suite, especially Google Sheets

License and Certification Requirements

A valid Minnesota Music teaching license - classroom or vocal; or proof of pending approved licensure
