FUNCTION

Early Childhood teachers in Early Childhood Family Education are responsible for transforming curriculum & instruction based on Early Childhood Indicators of progress, integration with parent education and best practices in early childhood.  The Early Childhood teacher creates a safe learning environment and facilitates learning that is anti-racist, developmentally appropriate, respectful and inclusive. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Multilingual in English as well as Spanish.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anti-racist teaching for children ages birth to age eight and their families
  • Demonstrated, unwavering commitment to anti-racist teaching & learning
  • Experience in urban, multicultural & multilingual education 
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, cultural differences and students learning English as a second language
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the process of acculturation to American society
  • Strong self-awareness and the ability to accurately recognize how one’s emotions and thoughts influence behavior
  • Strong ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from backgrounds and cultures different from one’s own
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain healthly and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Communicate clearly, listen actively, and negotiate conflict constructively
  • Maintain a positive, optimistic and mindful attitude
  • Capable of thriving in circumstances involving ambiguity and nuance

  • Possess a current Minnesota Birth to Five teaching license
  • Knowledge of best practices in early childhood education, relevant curriculum and assessments

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lesson planning including integration with Parent Education, implementation of culturally sustaining curriculum for classes with children ages birth to 5 and parent/child-interaction activities
  • Create & sustain learning environments that are safe, respectful and interesting as well as multicultural/gender and ability fair/developmentally appropriate.  Select, adapt and individualize materials appropriate for diverse student populations and skill levels
  • Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning and problem solving through play-based approach
  • Teach in variety of settings such as home visits, K-12 schools, partnerships etc
  • Establish & support developmentally appropriate instructional and behavioral expectations for students and effectively communicate those to students and their families
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational decisions and use family and community resources to support learning
  • Assess students’ developmental, cognitive and social needs and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs
  • Regularly assess student learning by using variety of informal assessment strategies
  • Facilitate positive interactions between students and teacher, student and peers and student and other adults
  • Model learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for students
  • Provides direction and classroom supervision of support staff
  • Assess own instructional effectiveness through District Standards Of Effective Instruction (SOEI) and the Professional Development Process (PDP)
  • Participate in ongoing and regular staff, team and individual professional development
  • Collaborate with peers to develop, plan and implement best practices based on the needs/abilities of the students
  • Participate in team-based planning and problem solving
  • Create and maintain a positive and collegial working relationship with all members of the ECE staff
  • Travel between locations
  • Evening and Saturday work required

 

Education and Experience Guidelines

● Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.

● Bilingual Preferred

● Prior successful experience student teaching or teaching in an urban, multicultural education setting.

● Demonstrated continued professional development through course work, research, peer collaboration and/or job-embedded staff development.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS A valid Minnesota teaching license in Preschool ; or proof of pending approved licensure
