SUMMARY:  Lead Somali Heritage Language Programming implementation and evaluation at K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 levels at designated sites.  Support and collaborate with World Language and Multilingual staff concerning the development, implementation and evaluation of best practices and instructional strategies for EL students in bilingual programming to attain high academic achievement according to District and State Standards.  Facilitate ongoing staff, team and individual professional development.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Leads implementation and continuation of Somali Heritage Language Program to ensure ambitious school improvement with identified metrics for students and their families.
  • Leads oversight of the Somali Heritage Language Program.
  • Provides support to schools to assist them in improving outcomes for English learners.
  • Provides instructional leadership by modeling best practices for English Learners.
  • Provides teachers with high challenge, high support learning opportunities.
  • Aligns their individual work with the mission and vision of the department and the district.
  • Collaborates to achieve the strategic goals of the department and district.

 

Responsibilities

  • Support district efforts in reaching four priorities of MTSS, Equity, Literacy and Social Emotional Learning.
  • Support Somali Language Program at existing Elementary (K-5) sites and Secondary 6-8 and 9-12 in the K-12 language pathway.
  • Utilizes internal district department and input of stakeholders to strengthen program at district, school and student levels.
  • Conduct site visits to assigned building to collaborate with administrators, Heritage Language, and EL staff concerning the development, implementation and evaluation of best practices and instructional strategies for EL students to attain high academic achievement according to district and state standards.
  • Support EL Lead Coach in selected schools to build classroom and content teacher capacity to plan, instruct and assess English learners through an innovative and participatory coaching cycles that leverage SIP identified strategies for each site.
  • Support EL Lead Coach in creating and providing building level Professional Development on staff PD days and other opportunities
  • Facilitate Multilingual Instructional Leadership Team meetings and Facilitate teams of EL and Heritage Language teachers in defining effective instructional strategies and program models for all levels of EL students both elementary and secondary
  • Collaborate with Multilingual team to set goals and align work to meet the goals of the District’s Strategic Plan, and the vision and mission of the Multilingual Department
  • Collaborate with Teaching and Learning staff to embed effective EL & Heritage Language teaching strategies into content curriculum and professional development
  • Provide professional development to teachers and administrators on effective Biliteracy, EL teaching strategies, especially focusing on developing academic language, to improve Heritage Language & EL students’ academic achievement
  • Engage Multilingual families in district-wide opportunities to learn and share their experience in MPS EL/Bilingual programs
  • Assist mainstream, ESL, Bilingual Content and Sheltered Instruction teachers in alignment of curriculum, lesson delivery and collaboration.
  • Assist in the oversight process of exiting students from the EL program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Valid Minnesota classroom teaching license with Language Proficiency endorsement and/or Bilingual/BiCultural and/or English as a Second Language required.
  • Bachelor's degree and teaching credentials from an accredited college or university required, M.A. preferred.
  • Instructional coach and/or similar building leadership preferred as well as a willingness to be trained in new methodologies
  • A deep understanding of the bilingual language learning environment and what teachers and students need for rigorous, grade-level instruction
  • Native Somali Proficiency; Bilingual and Biliterate
  • Experience in bilingual program design and support.
  • Strong familiarity with College and Career-ready standards
  • Prior teaching experience with newcomers and Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Exemplary organization skills
