Project Coordinator, Shelter Coordinator/School Support & Training
SUMMARY
Under general supervision, leads efforts to improve outcomes for students in emergency shelter, including providing direct school support, and coordinating and supporting district level priorities and initiative.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Provides support for implementation of Homeless/Highly Mobile (HHM) Department mission and vision.
● Coordinates planning and implementation of projects including scope, goals and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders. Specific project responsibilities include:
○ Partners with emergency shelter and transitional housing providers to ensure that students and families have barriers removed to full participation in their education.
○ Maintains awareness of external resources related to emergency shelter and connects students, families and staff to needed support.
○ Leads McKinney Vento student placement decisions for the Enrollment team, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and equitable access to education.
○ Collaborates with the Transportation Coordinator and the Transportation Department on ensuring that students have access to reliable transportation and methods for troubleshooting challenges.
○ Supports school social workers in their role as the HHM lead at their site
○ Advises school teams in developing and implementing practices that support full participation and improved outcomes for students in emergency shelter.
○ Communicates and builds relationships with schools, including educators and school leaders.
○ Designs and leads training and support for new and returning school social workers into their role as the site lead for supporting students in temporary/transitional living situations.
○ Partners with other HHM staff and other departments on district-wide practices that improve outcomes for students experiencing homelessness..
○ Coordinates efforts to involve staff, students and families in the development and implementation of site-specific activities and programs to promote educational stability and equitable opportunities for success for students in transition.
● Creates and implements communication plans for projects to keep all stakeholders up-to-date on project progress.
● Creates follow up plans for evaluation of implemented projects.
● Collaborates with outside partners.
● Develops and delivers project-related training for school staff and supports additional professional development opportunities with external partners as needed.
● Continually manage project expectations with team members and other stakeholders; identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team.
● Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
● Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
● Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
● Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field; AND two (2) years of demonstrated experience in the homeless sector; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
● Minimum 2 years of experience working with families experiencing homelessness, preferably in a shelter setting.
● Minimum 2 years of experience as a school social worker, school counselor, teacher or similar position focused on education or youth development
● Bilingual, Spanish/English
● People with lived experience of homelessness are encouraged to apply
● Demonstrated skills in leadership, and/or macro level work
● Experience working in an urban community
Knowledge of:
● The role of systemic racism in housing inequities.
● The current local context of housing and family homelessness.
● The McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act and the rights of students experiencing homelessness.
● Rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Education and other governing agencies
● Principles and practices of professional development.
● State and Federal laws governing public sector grant funded programs.
● Child and adolescent development.
● Local community resources, regional community services programs, and regional training programs.
● Personal computers utilizing standard software, and specialized MPS and state agency software applications and procedures.

● The role and responsibilities of school social workers in MPS
● Principles and practices for project management and organizational development
● Minneapolis Public Schools and Service Center Departments, as well as outside partners including the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

● Computer software applications related to duties (including MPS-specific software and systems, Miicrosoft suite, and Smartsheet)

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Minnesota Driver’s License is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This position requires travel to partner sites; time is split between school sites.
School environment; may involve lifting up to 40 pounds; and the ability to sit, walk, and/or stand for extended periods of time, both indoors and outdoors.
This position is a 50-week position with a start date of July 1, 2025
