SUMMARY

Under general supervision, Licensed Practical Nurses provide basic public school nursing services in the examination and treatment of patients; as well as promote, maintain and restore good health at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) facilities.  Incumbents provide nursing care to students and participate in the health program for the general school population; including students with physically handicapping conditions.  Additionally, incumbents administer medications to students by nebulizer, gastrostomy tube, or rectal valium; maintain current files of student emergency cards; assist with vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening of students; assist with daily routine care of students who have a physical handicap; and perform lab work to test blood sugar. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides nursing services within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.

  • Follows protocols, procedures and written care plans to administer medications and treatments; delivers first aid and episodic care under the delegation and guidance of the licensed school nurse.
  • Utilizes physical assessment skills such as lung auscultation, monitoring of vital signs, and nursing observation skills to determine student health status and take appropriate action.
  • Participates in plan-of-care for students with special or chronic health needs to include nursing care for medically fragile or technology dependent students.
  • Provides ongoing observations and communication in regard to student’s health condition and response to plan-of-care to the licensed school nurse, teacher and parent/guardian.
  • Follows District and State protocols/procedures to ensure infection control practices are maintained.
  • Follows communicable disease protocols/procedures including prevention, tracking and follow-up.
  • Assists with vision, hearing and growth screenings following District and State guidelines as requested by the licensed school nurse or per parent/teacher request.
  • Participates as a member of the Site Emergency Response Team to prepare for and respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintains accurate and complete health records for students and enters data into the Electronic Pupil Health Record.
  • Participates in special education time studies and appropriately logs IEP nursing services for reimbursement.
  • Maintains inventory of first aid supplies and equipment; re-orders supplies as needed.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment 
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information. 
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program; AND two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. 

 

Knowledge of: 

  • State and Federal laws and regulatory issues governing school health, including rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health and other governing agencies.
  • Current nursing practice and skills in pediatric healthcare. 
  • Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and concepts of disease. 
  • School health and safety protocols and regional healthcare issues.
  • Nutrition and health maintenance issues for children and young adults.
  • Regional community service agencies and other governmental assistance programs. 
  • Principles of record keeping and confidential records and file management.
  • Customer service and public relations methods and practices.

 

Skill in:

  • Providing effective nursing services, assessing patient situations and taking effective course of action within scope of authority.
  • Performing technical nursing procedures for students with complex medical needs (under the delegation and supervision of the licensed school nurse).
  • Using initiative and judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Monitoring and evaluating student’s health conditions.
  • Responding appropriately to emergency situations. 
  • Providing effective health education. 
  • Analyzing and identifying healthcare problems and coordinating efforts with the licensed school nurse to recommend effective solutions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and students.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. 

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Licensed Practical Nursing license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing. 
  • Ongoing First Aid/CPR certification is required; additional health and safety training may be required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and school health clinic. A job in this category requires moderate physical efforts, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and ability to lift, move and carry up to 40 pounds; full manual dexterity and visual acuity are required; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and air- and blood-borne pathogens. Must be capable of responding to emergencies at the school site in a timely manner and to perform CPR.
