Director, K-12 Literacy and the Humanities

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, plan, execute, and direct all aspects of the District’s K-12 Literacy Framework, and Social Studies, and Fine Arts programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, content integration, and professional development to support all schools; manages district level literacy projects and collaborates closely with other district leadership to advance achievement for all MPS students.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Core Academics, directs the District’s K-12 Literacy Framework and K-12 Social Studies and Fine Arts programs.

  • Develops, coordinates and delivers professional development and related services to content teachers, principals, and other school and district staff.

  • Works in close collaboration with the Director of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to provide ongoing support of the MTSS model with all stakeholders.

  • Manages staff, develops priorities, and assigns tasks and projects; develops staff skills, evaluates performance, and trains staff on all Literacy, Social Studies, and Fine Arts programs, policies and strategies; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve schedules, priorities, workload, critical concerns and technical issues; assures that appropriate services are provided, and goals are defined and achieved.

  • Manages budgets and expenditures according to district policies and state laws. 

  • Builds capacity with school leadership teams and teachers across content areas, departments, and divisions to ensure evidence-based, culturally responsive instructional practices are promoting high levels of learning and outcomes among all student groups and to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning at the site.

  • Works closely with the Director of Preschool to ensure the implementation plan of the Birth to Adult Literacy Framework, in addition to identifying progress monitoring tools to measure the depth and quality of the implementation.

  • Implements practices and strategies that reduce/eliminate racial disparities in student outcomes and course enrollments.

  • Leads the District process of creating/adopting instructional materials which support standards-based instruction and learning, and integration of disciplinary literacy practices across Social Studies and the Fine Arts.

  • Supports implementation of MPS literacy instruction within Literacy and English Language Arts (ELA), as well as the integration of disciplinary literacy practices across all content areas, including instructional models which ensure integration of reading; writing; and listening, speaking, viewing and exchanging ideas. Works closely with the Director of Math and Sciences to ensure quality implementation of disciplinary literacy.

  • Works closely with the Director of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to create and implement a tiered intervention system to ensure grade level proficiency in literacy.

  • Works closely with the Department of Multilingual Learning and Magnets to ensure alignment with and integration of WIDA standards.

  • Ensures alignment of literacy curricula, instructional practices, and assessments to the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards.

  • Ensures alignment to and exemplary implementation of the Minnesota K-12 Social Studies and Minnesota K-12 Fine Arts Standards.

  • Coordinates with community partner organizations involved with the K-12 Literacy, Social Studies, and Fine Arts programs on behalf of MPS.

  • Designs, implements, and monitors systems and processes for reporting to families on students’ academic progress in literacy.

  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.

  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.



 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 

  • Master’s degree in education, AND

  • A minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience, AND

  • Experience with instructional coaching; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.


 

Knowledge of: 
  • Minneapolis Public Schools policies and practices.

  • Knowledge of MN K-12 Academic Standards.

  • Current educational research, instructional strategies, evidence-based practices and national programs in education.

  • Principles and techniques for project management and organizational development.

  • Techniques and practices for efficient and cost-effective management of resources.

  • Principles of record keeping and records. 

  • Computer software applications as related to duties.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Current State of Minnesota Teaching License in Literacy

  • Valid Minnesota State Driver’s License

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
