SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs general carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, wooden structures, furniture and fixtures; repairs and maintains buildings and structures according to job specifications and building codes.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Performs general carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, wooden structures, furniture and fixtures in MPS buildings in accordance with building codes, standard procedures, and MPS policy; follows all safety precautions and procedures.
• Evaluates work orders and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience; duties will vary according to job assignment and individual skills.
• Examines assigned carpentry project, and makes repairs and corrections as needed; identifies materials and equipment to be repaired, and determines the proper repair techniques.
• Builds, repairs, and alters buildings and wooden structures; installs and repairs floors, window and door frames, interior trim, doors, walls, equipment, furniture, and other structures; tests finished job to verify durability.
• Repairs and replaces door locks and hardware; rebuilds and installs special locks and cylinders; makes keys and maintains records.
• Reads and interprets plans, specifications, and instructions.
• Operates hand and power tools in compliance with all safety procedures; maintains hand and power tools to assure safe and efficient operation; inspects equipment, replaces worn parts, sharpens blades and edges, repairs or arranges for the repair of damaged equipment.
• Maintains and cleans work area and equipment; reports maintenance needs to supervisor.
• Verifies that all safety rules and regulations are observed on the job site.
• Recycles and re-uses materials wherever possible.
• Operates a variety of trucks, equipment and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspects vehicles and equipment and assures all equipment is properly maintained; reports and resolves problems requiring additional maintenance and repair.
• Coordinates work with other building trades workers to improve efficiency and reduce corrections.
• Responds to emergencies and assists with emergency work as directed.
• Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment 
• Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
• Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
• Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND successful completion of an approved apprenticeship in carpentry skills; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. 

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry projects.
• Federal and state safety rules and regulations, including OSHA requirements.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Techniques for repairing and maintaining buildings and structures.
• Local, state and Federal building codes, standards and regulations.
• Environmentally responsible and resource-efficient building techniques.
• Mathematics principles sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.

Skill in:

• Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
• Understanding and applying the full range of principles, regulations, procedures and quality standards for carpentry projects.
• Following safety precautions and safe work practices, and maintaining safety standards.
• Reading and understanding plans, specifications, and technical documents.
• Calculating mathematical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
• Following verbal and written instructions.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Commercial Driver’s License may be required.  Apprentice training completion certifications and technical licenses from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry are preferred and may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical efforts; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed including use of safety equipment; a job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
