SUMMARY

With minimal supervision, this position will assist licensed staff at Early Childhood Screening focusing on school readiness. The incumbent hired will be expected to independently implement a variety of student, family, community services and educational programs in support of district’s school readiness and cultural diversity goals, as well as act as a liaison between the students, family, community, and the Early Childhood Education programs (ECFE, Early Childhood Screening, Teen Parent Services, and High Five.)

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting teachers and staff in educational functions, as well as other services, to maintain a safe, diverse, and productive learning environment; and working with students to reinforce classroom learning/educational programs and improve personal skills.
  • Assisting students in learning processes; reinforcing positive behavior; providing individual instruction; and encouraging socialization and positive communication.
  • Monitoring and supervising student activities; promoting respect, supporting diversity, and explaining social norms and disciplinary consequences; de-escalating personal confrontations; and enforcing District policies and rules of conduct.
  • Monitoring students to record data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintaining files and keeping records of student progress and activities; and assuring all required written reports are completed and submitted.
  • Screening children seeking health or educational services to help determine need for support services such as transportation, social services, interpreter services, referral to community agencies or enrollment in quality early learning programming.
  • Serving as the first point of contact with families after referral received in Early Childhood Screening or B-5 Central Intake for appointment.
  • Assisting families in accessing screening, referrals and follow through services before, during and after the initial screening appointment.
  • Assisting in the development of school readiness materials for families.
  • Providing culturally relevant information to staff to assist in providing district services to students and families.
  • Meeting District’s standards for employee performance in attendance.
  • Participating in staff development/professional growth activities relevant to position responsibilities, School Improvement Plan (SIP) and or Department Improvement Plan (DIP), and Professional Development Plan (PDP).

 

CLASS DESIGNATIONS

This position will also have a bilingual Spanish and classroom support focus.  Further duties will include:

Bilingual - Spanish: Assisting licensed staff as an interpreter to facilitate the provision of health, education, or other services to non-English speaking, limited English speaking and/or bilingual/bicultural community members.

Classroom Support: Assisting licensed staff in classrooms to maintain a positive learning environment and reinforce classroom learning.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONs

60 semester or 90 quarter college credits OR A high school diploma/GED and a passing score of at least 460 on the ParaPro Assessessment.  (For more information on the ParaPro Assessment, contact Educational Testing Service at 1-800-772-9476 or www.ets.org/parapro.)

AND

2 years of experience working with children. Related experience may also be considered, at the discretion of Human Resources.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree in education, child development, parent education or a related area.
  • Certification in Minneapolis Preschool Screening Instrument (MPSI) administration.
  • Educational background  to assist site staff in the provision of health, education or other services.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, cultural differences.
  • Knowledge of the Early Childhood Screening and Early Childhood Family Education programs.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with students and their families, especially with related program needs.
  • Training and experience in the use of computers and other technology equipment, and the ability to assist familites with technology.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with others to assist families in connecting to community servicers that will support their child and family.
  • Ability to act in a leadership role and independently initiate and follow through on tasks under minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven community collaboration in large urban environment.

 

Ability to pass the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) examination demonstrating proficiency in the Spanish language.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

First Aid, CPR, AED and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training may be required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree, and working with special needs children. Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.  It will require the ability to manage student behavior with the physical capacity to work directly with and supervise students.
