The GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science) GISE (Guys in Science and Engineering) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Academy is an after-school and summer program designed specifically for K-8th grade students in the Minneapolis Public School District. The goal of these programs is for students to have measurable and significant gains in mathematics and science. The GEMS-GISE-STEM Academy programs are award-winning STEM programs that energize our students' excitement about the possibilities in cutting-edge learning experiences. We value the talent and innovation the programs’ developers and teachers bring to the Minneapolis Public Schools.
Qualifications:
- Individuals with strong interest and/or experience in science, technology, engineering, and/or math preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Comfortable with role as academic coach and under the direction of the classroom teacher
- Enjoy working with middle and high school students
- Ability to build positive relationships around academics with students in grades K-8
- Ability to motivate and encourage students to reach post-secondary educational goal
Salary:
- $15-$20/hour
Overview:
The Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (GEMS / Little GEMS) and Guys in Science and Engineering (GISE / Jr. GISE) coaching positions begin in September and continue through May 16th (Fall-Robotics/Spring-Energy, Electricity, and Electronics). Coaches facilitate students in the following: (1)Designing, building and programming (2) Applying real-world math, science, technology, and engineering concepts; (3)Researching challenges facing today’s scientists; (4) Learning critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills; (5) Engaging in STEM Exhibitions and Tournaments.
