SUMMARY
Under general supervision, assigns, directs, and reviews the work of assigned work crews in the maintenance and repair of MPS grounds, athletics fields, and surrounding areas.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:


 Leads work crews performing repair and maintenance activities for MPS grounds, including landscaping, athletics fields, and seasonal lawn care and snow removal.
 Directs work crews, coordinates assignments and schedules, and monitors work methods and procedures; inspects grounds, athletics fields, and surrounding areas to verify work quality and effective use of resources.
 Works on assigned projects, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience.
 Performs skilled grounds maintenance work as needed to meet workload demands
 Orders supplies, creates work orders, tracks budget and expenditures, reviews and processes timesheets, maintains operational logs and prepares operational reports.
 Maintains and repairs equipment and components; reports and resolves problems requiring additional maintenance and repair.
 Reviews and prioritizes work order requests; estimates time and materials required for projects.
 Coordinates district’s loaner and used furniture services; oversees warehouse operations.
 Manages inventory of materials and supplies; recycles and re-uses materials wherever possible.
 Operates a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspects vehicles and equipment and assures all equipment is properly maintained.
 Coordinates work with other building trades workers to improve efficiency and reduce corrections.
 Controls work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
 Reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; reports security issues and illegal activities.
 Provides customer service as needed, responds to requests, and assists co-workers and visitors.
 May direct and coordinate the work of contractors, temporary help, general repair workers, and other trades helpers.
 Responds to emergencies and coordinates work activities as directed.
 Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
 Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
 Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information.
 Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
 At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish the requirements of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND four (4) years of grounds maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

 

Knowledge of:
 Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance and repair.
 Federal and state safety rules and regulations, including OSHA requirements.
 Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
 Environmentally responsible and resource-efficient grounds maintenance techniques.
 Mathematics principles sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.

 

Skill in:
 Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
 Using proper safety precautions, and identifying problems and emergency situations.
 Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
 Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
 Reading and interpreting project drawings and schematic diagrams.
 Performing general math calculations and records management tasks.
 Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
 Supervising staff, and delegating tasks and authority.
 Following verbal and written instructions.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Class B Minnesota State Commercial Driver’s License (with no Airbrake Restriction) is required within six (6) months of the date of hire. Continued employment is contingent upon the maintenance of this license in a valid status.
Technical certifications for specialized equipment may be required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical efforts; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed including the use of safety equipment; a job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
